Today’s Lesson: the Video Game Industry

There once was a time when people got their video game fix in an arcade. Nowadays, you can play video games anywhere thanks to the internet, mobile devices, and game consoles. The industry itself is expected to grow to $112 billion by 2015, according to a report issued in July 2011 by technology research company, Gartner.

You can also earn a college degree in video games—and not just at an art or tech school either. Such degrees can now be earned at hundreds of colleges and universities in the US, including the University of Southern California and the University of California at Santa Cruz.

It’s no wonder Chaminade welcomed alumnus Marc Merrill ’98 back to its West Hills campus on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 to speak to the Eagle Engineering robotics team. Merrill is the president of online gaming publisher and developer, Riot Games. Students in Eagle Engineering received tips from this industry expert on their marketable skills as they start thinking about colleges and careers.

Chaminade thanks Marc Merrill for returning to Chaminade and sharing his time and talent with students. Merrill is a co-founder of Riot Games. Prior to his current position, he worked as a corporate marketing executive at Advanstar Communications. He has also worked in finance at Merrill Lynch and US Bancorp.
