Chaminade basketball player, Jaron Martin ’13 received the Farmers Student Athlete Citizen Award during halftime of Friday’s football game against Valencia. Presented by Farmers and Fox Sports West, the award honors Martin and other student athletes for excellence in education, on the athletic field and in giving back to the community.

Martin excels in the classroom with a 3.5 GPA, and at the end of 2012-2013 season, he will be a four-year Varsity player on the basketball team. Currently, he is 909 points away from the all-time leading scorer record at Chaminade; a record currently held by Chaminade Assistant Basketball Coach, Scott Borchart ’01. In 2010-2011, Martin led the Mission League in scoring with 21.6 points per game, and in 2011-2012 was the second leading scorer in the league with 19.7 points per game. He has also been selected First-Team All-League two years in a row, and voted as team captain for the past two seasons.

Despite a busy schedule balancing academics and athletics, Martin also finds time to give back to the community. He volunteers at his church, teaches basketball fundamentals to youths at local camps and clinics, and is involved with Habitat for Humanity through Chaminade.

Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach Todd Wolfson says of Martin, “His on-the-court skills and leadership abilities are uncanny and all the broken records show his contributions to the basketball program. But Jaron goes beyond that as a person…He is one of the most personable students on campus.”
