Ash Wednesday 2017

The Lenten season begins on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 with Ash Wednesday. Chaminade College Preparatory will hold a Prayer Service at its Chatsworth campus, and a Mass at its West Hills campus. Parents who would like to attend the Chatsworth liturgical service and receive ashes are asked to RSVP online. Ashes will also be distributed at the West Hills Mass.

DeLong Center, Chatsworth

10:40 a.m.
Uribe Sports Center, West Hills

Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence for Catholics. Abstinence from eating meat is to be observed on all Fridays during Lent. This applies to all persons 14 and older. The law of fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday (February 14) and Good Friday (March 30) applies to all persons 18-years-old and younger than 59. Fast and abstinence mean that one full meatless meal per day may be eaten. Two other meatless meals may be taken sufficient to maintain strength, but together they should not equal a full meal. Liquids, including milk and fruit juice, may be taken between meals. If health or ability to work is affected, fasting does not oblige.

Catholic Schools Week Celebration Continues

The celebration of Catholic School Week continued today with the middle school’s National Junior Honor Society lunchtime bake sale in support of Together in Mission (of the Los Angeles Archdiocese). Together in Mission helps the poorest parishes and schools, and works to improve the lives of the poor in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

The SHINE team sponsored a faith-sharing session in the gym. Students read a reading from the bible and shared what their ideal super hero of service would represent.

On the West Hills campus, students played Hoop Heroes during lunch and participated in a comment contest on Instagram, sharing who their everyday super heroes are and why they are inspiring. You can follow Campus Ministry’s Instagram contest on @campusminccp.

Chaminade Kicks off Catholic Schools Week

Chaminade kicked off Marianist Heritage/Catholic Schools Week on Sunday, January 28, with a school-wide Family Mass and Dinner held on the West Hills campus. More than 300 guests gathered to celebrate the gift of a Catholic Marianist education and to give honor to Blessed William Joseph Chaminade and his charism to be formed by Mary for the mission of Christ. Catholic Schools Week is an annual national celebration of Catholic education in the United States. This year’s celebration began January 28 and continues through February 3.

Chaminade’s West Hills and Chatsworth campuses are celebrating Catholic Schools Week with lunchtime activities, themed dress days, faith rallies, appreciation luncheons, and the Blessed William Joseph Chaminade Award.

The Season of Advent

Bro. Adam Becerra, fsp, DMin
Director of Mission Integration & Ministry

Next week Chaminade transitions into the season of Advent. This is a time of waiting in joyful hope for the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. Campus Ministry has chosen Awaken Hope as our Advent theme for 2017. We recall the wonderful story of the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary saying, “You shall bear a son and name him Emmanuel.”  With Mary’s profound “yes,” we are invited to prepare our hearts for the Incarnate God-with-us, Jesus Christ. This is what sets us apart from other Catholic schools – our call to ponder upon Mary’s yes in bringing Jesus Christ to a waiting world – a mandate from Blessed William Joseph Chaminade.

In order to prepare the way of our Lord, we will celebrate two prayer services that will be led by our very own SHINE and LIFE Teams on each of our campuses. These services will include scripture, music and personal testimonies given by students and faculty.  The dates and times are as follows:

  • Chatsworth: November 28 at 9:15 a.m. (DeLong Center)
  • West Hills: November 30 at 10:00 a.m. (Uribe Sports Center)

On December 8, we will also celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception Mass which deepens our understanding of Mary’s birth and how God acted upon her soul, keeping it “immaculate.” The Masses are scheduled as follows:

  • Chatsworth: 9:15 a.m. (DeLong Center) – Priest Celebrant, Fr. Ted Ley, SM
  • West Hills: 10:00 a.m. (Uribe Sports Center )- Priest Celebrant, Msgr. Raymond East (Pastor of St. Teresa of Avila, Washington D.C.)

Campus Ministry will also schedule times for our students to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation throughout the Advent season.

All of our parents are invited to attend one of our prayer services and Mass as we journey together in joyful hope for the birth of our Savior!
