Bro. Skip Matthews dies at 77: the face of Christ for others, especially for those in need

bro-skipSince 1994, Bro. Francis “Skip” Matthews, S.M. has been a fixture in the Chaminade family. He has graced the school with his infectious smile, boundless energy, and irreplaceable spirit.

Chaminade College Preparatory is deeply saddened to announce Bro. Skip died on December 14, 2016 in Cupertino, California. He was 77 years-old, with 57 years of religious profession. The entire school family will miss his presence on campus, be it through his work in Campus Ministry, supervisory time in the cafeteria, substituting in the classroom, or to discuss social justice, the Dodgers, or the previous night’s Chaminade basketball game. You could always count on a resounding, “Hello,” if you saw an older, white pick-up truck in the parking lot.

“Bro. Skip meant the world to Chaminade’s Chatsworth community,” says Middle School Principal, Mike Valentine, “To the students he was the official greeter,  the one who woke them up and started their day with an encouraging word and a smile. To the faculty and staff he was a true inspiration, mentor, and  confidant. I can’t think of a single adult on campus from the faculty, to the physical plant crew, to the support staff who didn’t have a special relationship with Bro. Skip.”

A native Angeleno, Bro. Skip was raised in Manhattan Beach. He attended grade school at American Martyrs, and later Junipero Serra High School in Gardena. He professed his first vows in 1959, in Santa Cruz. He studied with the Brothers of St. John of God at their Los Angeles hospital, and learned the fundamentals of nursing and caring for the elderly. In 1962, he made perpetual profession in the Society of Mary.

In his early ministry, Bro. Skip served in health care and directed the Marianist Infirmary in Honolulu, Hawaii. Ten years later, he became a paramedic at a remote facility in Zambia. He served there for 18 years, and also assisted with work at Matero Boys Secondary School, a Marianist school in Lusaka.

Chaminade President Rob Webb reflects, “Bro. Skip traveled the world, taking the charism of Fr. Chaminade with him. He lived a very full life bringing some of the most disenfranchised, disconnected people closer to God. He cherished his time at Chaminade as much as his time anywhere else. We are all blessed to have known him.”

In addition to his ministry at Chaminade, Bro. Skip volunteered at hospice and the Good Shepherd Shelter, a safe house for battered women and children. He also visited Skid Row twice a week to help the homeless and spend time with them. For more than 20 years, from December 1 to 24, Bro. Skip set up a table and offered to write cards to family members and friends of people living on Skid Row. This year, Bro. Skip could not do his usual work, but over the summer he collected clothes for to the Good Shepherd Shelter and cards for the Los Angeles Catholic Worker. The items were recently donated to both organizations by the Marianist Community.

Bro. Skip was honored in 2013 at the Annual Brothers Mass and Banquet with the Annual Brotherhood Award. Archbishop Jose Gomez and Bro. Larry Moen, C.M.F., presented him with the award, “Honoring Bro. Skip’s religious commitment to the service of the Lord as a Marianist Religious Brother and his faithful ministry in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles through education and outreach to the poor and the homeless.”

Chaminade Donates Items to Local Catholic School

In September students at Our Lady of Peace School were surprised with student desks, donated by Chaminade College Preparatory. In addition, stools, roller chairs, and other supplies were given to the North Hills parish school.

Over the summer Chaminade updated furniture in some of its middle school classrooms, and the previously used items were given to Our Lady of Peace School.

Chaminade Students Join Other Catholic High School Students for Year of Mercy Service Event

Last week Chaminade College Preparatory LIFE Team members, Anagette San Roman ’17 and Daniella Torres ’17 participated in a joint service project with other San Fernando Region Catholic high schools at the Fred Jordan Mission on Skid Row.

Students from Chaminade, Notre Dame, Crespi, Louisville, Holy Family, Flintridge Sacred Heart, and Alemany volunteered for the mission’s annual Back to School event. Back to School provides Los Angeles Unified School District students with new clothing, shoes, socks, backpacks, school supplies, haircuts, hygiene kits, and food. The high school volunteers stuffed backpacks with school supplies, and handed them out; as well as passed out clothing and other personal care items.

Following the event, volunteers attended Mass at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in celebration of the culmination of the Year of Mercy.

Chaminade Holds Blessing of the Animals

In honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Chaminade College Preparatory held its annual Blessing of the Animals prayer service. While the celebration occurred the day before the October 4 feast day, the service welcomed families and their pets to the school’s Chatsworth campus.

Middle school students and faculty who did not bring pets lined up around the edge of the 8th Grade Lawn for a pet parade. At the end of the route, pets and owners were met by school chaplain, Fr. Ted Ley ’58, who blessed each animal.

While this is one of the more lively prayer services held, it is an opportunity for the middle school honor St. Francis and all of God’s creatures.

Campus Ministry Renovations Completed

When students and faculty returned to Chaminade College Preparatory in August, they found updated and renovated Campus Ministry spaces. Thanks to fundraising efforts during Chaminade Gala in April 2016, the school was blessed with much-needed updates to two of the most popular spots on its campuses.

Campus Ministry at the middle school has moved to a more central location and is now across the library. The office space has been transformed into an area where students spend their free time, and during lunch, they fill it wall-to-wall! Multiple sitting areas offer comfortable spots for lounging, homework, board games, and more.

In addition, middle school student clubs and teachers use the new Campus Ministry office as a meeting space. From SHINE gatherings to prayer opportunities and movie club meetings, to a place for family spirit and community building, in a matter of weeks, the office has added significant value to the school community. Faith, fellowship, and fun continue to flourish in Chatsworth.

Affectionately known as Chaminade’s West Hills “living room,” Campus Ministry was repainted, and new furniture and flooring were installed.

Like a true living room, students relax here after a hectic day, watch movies, play heated battles of Madden or FIFA on the Xbox360, or catch-up with one another. The LIFE Team has more planning space in which to better build small faith communities on campus, and as retreat season approaches, the whole of Campus Ministry looks forward to many reunions during which retreatants can relive their memories and experiences.

Renovations for the Campus Ministry rooms at both campuses were made possible by a campaign known as fund-a-need during Chaminade Gala. In a matter of minutes, 88 donors raised their bid paddles and contributed more than $76,000 to this transformational project.
