Chaminade Softball battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the top of the sixth inning during the CIF-SS Division 5 Championship game against John W. North High School (North) to win the title. This is the Eagles’ first CIF softball title since 2007.
Chaminade went into the sixth inning, down two runs. With one out, and the bases loaded, Gabby Hensley ’20 tied up the game at 3-3 after her at bat. Then Alexis Klee hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and the Eagles took the lead, 4-3. Junior pitcher Tessa Magnanimo closed out the bottom of the inning on six pitches.
In the seventh, freshman Payton Wagner hit an RBI single to put the Eagles up two runs over the Huskies. Magnanimo completed the game on 92 pitches and four hits, and Chaminade defeated North, 5-3.
The Chaminade Players have been recognized for their stellar work during the 2017-2018 school year with four National Youth Arts Awards:
- Outstanding Production: Macbeth
- Lead Performance in a Musical: Emma Mumford ’18 as Miss Adelaide, Guys and Dolls
- Lead Performance in a Play: Samantha Bader ’18 as Lady Macbeth, Macbeth
- Lead Performance in a Play: Noah Baum ’18 as Macbeth, Macbeth
A panel of more than 50 judges and reviewers selected award winners from a list of nominations. In addition to the winners, Chaminade was recognized with nominations for Outstanding Production, Guys and Dolls; Featured Performance in a Play, Sean McCarthy ’20 as Porter, First Murderer, Siward in Macbeth; Costume Design, Lori Lee, Macbeth; and Choreography, Nancy Dobbs Owen, Stephen Bishop, and Mia Lind, Macbeth.

Chaminade Softball is headed to the CIF-SS Division 5 Championship game! They defeated Culver City, 6-5, in an away match up.
The semifinal game was tied 1-1 through the bottom of the fifth inning when Culver City scored three runs to take the lead, 4-1. In the top of the sixth inning, sophomore Gabriella Hensley hit a two-run home run, bringing the Eagles within one. Then in the seventh inning, Sarah Dady ’18 (who hit a three-run walk-off in the bottom of the ninth inning in Round One) hit a three-run home run, giving Chaminade a 6-4 lead. Culver City was able to score one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Eagles prevailed.
Championship game information will be released at a later date.
Chaminade Softball faced off against La Cañada High School in the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Division 5 Softball Championships on Thursday, May 24. The Eagles came away with a 2-1 victory, at home.
The win puts Chaminade in the semifinals on Tuesday, May 29. They will play Culver City in an away match-up.
