The Chaminade College Preparatory Board of Directors has authorized the school to embark upon several significant facility enhancements at the Chatsworth campus, beginning this summer.
New Classroom Building Project
The first project is a new classroom building to replace existing modular classrooms. This building will enhance the evolving classroom experience by including significant student group work areas to further support Chaminade’s student centered learning philosophy. Each classroom will open into adjoining flexible spaces which will double the size of the classroom. This exciting new concept will increase student engagement and allow for more project based learning activities. Construction is scheduled to begin June 2, 2014, and will take one year to complete. The site will be fenced off during the school year, and replacement modular units will be brought in for the displaced classrooms.
Library Expansion Project
The second project is the expansion of our library to increase the space from its current 1,800 square feet to 4,600 square feet. The new library will also begin on June 2 and is scheduled to be open for the second semester in early 2015. Chaminade aims to make the library space more accessible to students and create a more flexible learning environment. This new space will include book stacks, quiet reading area, computer research space, lounging and group meeting areas. In addition to the indoor space, a new outdoor gathering area will be constructed for student and classroom use. During construction, the library will be relocated to an accessible area for students.
Center Courtyard Renovation Project
The next project to receive attention is the center courtyard, which is currently all asphalt. This space will be renovated from the ground up to include improved sports courts and additional green landscaping. The new area will include terraced landscaping at the north end with new sports courts at the middle and south ends. The goal is to beautify and upgrade the space while remaining functional for a wide variety of sports and student activities. This project will also begin in early June with a target completion for the beginning of the fall semester.
Additional Parking
Lastly, the parking lot near the guard kiosk on Oakdale Avenue will be renovated and made into a formal, larger parking area. During busy times on campus (i.e., after school sports events, Mass, or volunteer meetings) there is a need for additional parking in this area. Completion of the parking lot is also targeted for the beginning of the fall semester.
Summer Programs
With all of this heavy construction happening simultaneously during the summer, hosting summer programs on the Chatsworth campus is not practical. For this summer, the West Hills campus will host all summer school classes and programs, and a shuttle service will operate between campuses. In the summer of 2015, summer classes and camps will resume on both campuses. Construction during the school year may be an inconvenience, but Chaminade will work toward minimizing any impact to the student experience.
