Chaminade College Preparatory has a new state champion in its midst. On Saturday, February 24, Katja Osteen ’21 became the school’s first state champion in wrestling.

The freshman wrestler pinned her opponent 49 seconds into the first round, and secured her title in the 160-pound weight class. It was a fantastic end to the two-day CIF State Girls Wrestling Championship for Osteen. She is also the 2018 CIF-SS Masters champion (another first for Eagle wrestling).

Katja is no stranger to the winner’s circle. As a Chaminade 7th grader, she became the school’s first female wrestler to take first place in her weight class. Along the way, she defeated male wrestlers from Paul Revere and Harvard-Westlake. She has been wrestling since she was four-years-old (for more on her story, see the Fall/Winter 2016 issue of Chaminade Now).

While Katja wrestled her way to a state title in Visalia, her older brother, Erich Osteen ’19 and teammate Patrick Rowland ’19 competed in the Boys CIF-SS Wrestling Masters Meet in Temecula.

Rowland closed out his junior season as a Masters qualifier, two matches short of qualifying for the 2018 CIF State Boys Wrestling Championship. In the 132-pound weight class, he finished 49th in California, was Chaminade’s Mission League finalist, and 6th at the CIF-SS Boys Individual Championships.
