Valerie Higgins ’16 Named to USA Basketball Under-18 National Team

IMG_9556Chaminade’s CIF-SS Open Division player of the year, USC-bound guard, Valerie Higgins ’16 has been named to  USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team.

After three days of trials at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the roster was announced, and Higgins was one of 12 players selected. She will travel with the team in July to Chile for the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. This is Higgins’ first call up to a USA Basketball event.

In addition to her All-CIF honors, she was selected to the Jordan Brand Classic All-American West Team, Daily News co-player of the year, and Los Angeles Times girls’ basketball player of the year.

 

Eagles Win Girls’ Basketball CIF Southern Regional Championship

With seconds to go in the CIF Southern Regional Open Division final, Leonna Odom ’16 put up a three-point shot which won the March 19 game. The buzzer-beater at the Walter Pyramid lifted the Eagles 50-49 over the Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits and gave Chaminade College Preparatory’s Girls’ Basketball team the CIF Southern Regional Open Division Championship.

Next they travel to Sacramento for the CIF State Open Division final on Saturday, March 26. Chaminade faces the Northern Regional Champion, Miramonte (Orinda), in a 6:00 p.m. tipoff at the Sleep Train Arena. Girls’ Basketball Advances to Regional Open Division Championship

Chaminade C -on white- Eagles V2The Chaminade’s Girls’ Basketball team celebrated a CIF State Basketball Southern Regional Open Division semifinal win on Tuesday night. Their 79-59 win over Mission Hills puts them in the championship game on Saturday, March 19.

Chaminade faces Long Beach Poly in the Open Division final at Cal State Long Beach’s Walter Pyramid. This is the third time the Eagles will face Long Beach Poly this season. The game tips off at 5:00 p.m. on March 19.

Tickets are $18 per adult, $10 for seniors (65 and older), children, and students with a valid ASB card. General admission tickets will be available for purchase online at 12 Noon on Thursday, March 17, and at the Pyramid-Long Beach State Box Office from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. that same day. In addition, all games will be televised by Time Warner Cable and streamed live online at www.twccommunity.com.

Girls’ Basketball Moves on to Open Division Regional Semifinal

Chaminade C -on white- Eagles V2Chaminade Girls’ Basketball won their CIF State Basketball Southern Regional Open Division quarterfinal match-up against Palisades, 79-67 on Friday, March 11. The win propels them into the regional semifinal on Tuesday, March 15. They face the #4 seed, Mission Hills at 7:00 p.m., at the Uribe Center (West Hills).

Boys’ Basketball finished their season on Saturday, March 12. They played Harvard-Westlake in the CIF State Basketball Southern Regional Division IV quarterfinal. The 57-47 loss ended the Eagles post-season run.

Girls’ Basketball is the Back-to-Back Open Division Champion

With a 72-60 victory over Long Beach Poly on Saturday, March 5, Chaminade Girls’ Basketball won the CIF Southern Section Open Division championship for the second year in a row. Seniors Leonna Odom and Valerie Higgins led the way. Odom finished with 23 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and one steal. Higgins had 24 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

Chaminade will next play in the CIF State Basketball Southern Regional Open Division quarterfinal on Friday, March 11. They are seeded #1 and will face the #8 seed, Palisades at home. The game tips off at 7:00 p.m. in the Uribe Center on the West Hills campus.

As the CIF Southern Section 3A Runner Up, the Boy’s Basketball team has been invited to the Southern Regional Division IV playoffs. As the #2 seed, they will play at home, on Wednesday, March 9 against Central City Value. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. in the Uribe Center on the West Hills campus.
