Center for Excellence Goes to Maui

Final exams for Chaminade students ended on Wednesday, May 26, and four days later, 12 juniors and seniors, along with their chaperones, boarded a plane for Maui. The group left Southern California and began their summer vacation with an ecology trip through Chaminade College Preparatory’s Center for Excellence (CFE).

The nine-day trip gave students the opportunity to contribute directly to current research projects on Maui, as well as learn about conservation and restoration issues and efforts. While coursework involved snorkeling, collecting fish species data, surveying sea turtles, and more, students also had the opportunity to study the biodiversity of the taro plant at the Waihe’e Ranch. Their day began at 7:00 a.m. and they worked until 12:00 p.m. Students studied various taro plants, cleaned taro patches, and prepared new roots of taro for future planting. They then used their knowledge of science to make meaningful decisions on how to better live a sustainable and resourceful life.

The Ecology Project International kicks off the summer portion of CFE. Summer Session I officially begins with on-campus activities on June 12. Two more sessions run through July 14. For more information, please visit www.chaminade.org/centerforexcellence or contact the CFE at (818) 347-8300.

Chaminade College Preparatory’s Center for Excellence is the perfect place for students entering Grades 1 through 12 to spend their summer learning and growing. Currently in its third week for the 2015 summer session, the program offers classes throughout the morning and afternoon.

Students can expand their horizons through the Great Books Academy, robotics, mock trial, speech, etc. Juniors and seniors are able to prepare for the SAT, while all students entering high school grades can brush up on their technology skills through a Computer Literacy Bootcamp.

The Center for Excellence also offers enrichment through service and leadership training. In Week 1, My Name My Story (MNMS), a social leadership organization founded by Amit Dodani ’15, hosted a leadership and social entrepreneurship camp. The camp presented a unique experience that taught students to be empathetic leaders and to develop a passion to be change-makers in their schools and communities.

Students can also pursue their creative passions through Chaminade. Through Week 5, the Center for Excellence offers also musical theater, dance, cheer, and aerial dance classes. During the first three weeks, Chaminade’s own high school Drama Director, Yvette Bishop taught Musical Theater Intensive to students entering 7th through 12th grades. At the end of the course, students presented Into the Woods on the Marilyn Simon Stage of the Tutor Family Center for the Performing Arts.

Summer is also a great time for children ages 7 to 14 to join the Center for Excellence’s Sports Camps and explore athletics. From basketball to soccer and field hockey to lacrosse, as well as volleyball, fencing, and more, there is a wide variety of activities. The West Hills campus also hosts Varsity Camps , which gives students the chance to work with Chaminade’s Varsity head coaches, players, and former athletes with college and professional experience.

The Chaminade Center for Excellence (CCE) is Chaminade College Preparatory’s answer for parents who seek year-round enrichment opportunities for their children. Through relevant, engaging and dynamic learning experiences, CCE students will expand their knowledge and creative expression.

Learning activities kickoff this summer, at both our Chatsworth and West Hills campuses, for students who will be in 1st through 12th grade during the 2013-2014 school year. Students looking to improve their reading and writing skills, experiment with their science and performing arts talents, or sharpen their athletic fundamentals will all find a place at Chaminade this summer. In addition, students can take advantage of special summer experiences such as the Costa Rica Sea Turtle Preservation Field Experience, Mock Trial Camp, History Through Art at The Getty Villa, and a Los Angeles Audubon Ecology field trip.

Offerings at the High School campus in West Hills focus on our phenomenal visual and performing arts programs and our championship athletic teams. Each week, students can choose from sports camps and summer intensives in musical theater, dance, film, stagecraft, and music.

Programs on the Middle School campus center around the innovative and student-centered Great Books Academy. The Great Books Summer Academy offers two sessions on the Chatsworth campus: Session 1 is from June 10 to June 26, 2013 and Session 2 is from July 1 to July 19, 2013. All students will have a Great Books class as the anchor to their schedules and have an opportunity to choose three electives classes from science experiments to drawing and painting. This is an enrichment program designed for students in a college preparatory environment. It is rigorous, engaging and student-centered. Both Chaminade students and guests are welcome to enroll.
