In July 2012, Nate Newman was diagnosed with a brain tumor and it goes without saying his life changed dramatically. While he has undergone many treatments and surgeries, his treatments continue today. The treatment schedule keeps Newman away from school, so is no longer a Chaminade student, but he is still a big part of the family.

You may have seen Newman recently, sitting on the bench as an assistant coach for the Chaminade Boys’ Varsity Basketball team. Head Coach, Todd Wolfson invited him to join the staff after Newman tweeted about how he thought he’d be in high school playing basketball.

Last night, Leanne Suter of ABC7 Eyewitness News stopped by Chaminade’s high school campus in West Hills to interview Newman and share his inspiring story. Watch the video here.

Eagles Win Basketball State Championships and Third State Crown in One Season

Chaminade’s Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams made history this weekend when they each won a CIF State championship. These wins are a first for both programs, and for Chaminade College Preparatory.

The boys’ team faced Sir Francis Drake of San Anselmo in the Division III state final on Friday, March 28 at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. More than 380 miles away from home, they won the title, 71-51. Junior guard Michael Oguine scored a game-high 26 points, while senior guard Justin Eisen contributed 15 points and sophomore center Trevor Stanback scored 12 points and had four blocks and nine rebounds.

The next day, the girls’ team played in the Division II state final against Archbishop Mitty of San Jose. Chaminade’s 80-51 win over Mitty also set the points scored record in a Division II state championship. Senior center Devin Stanback matched her career-high with 27 points scored, and pulled down 10 rebounds. In addition, senior forward Natalie Valenzuela ended the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Valerie Higgins added 15 points and senior guard Kayle Fandino scored 12 points.

With these two wins, Chaminade became the ninth school in California history to take both titles in the same season, as well as the first school to win state championships in boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball and football in the same year.
