Chaminade Basketball Teams Advance to State Finals

More than 70 miles away from their home gym, both Chaminade’s Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball teams made history on Saturday, March 22 when they won their regional division finals. Now, for the first time in school history, both teams will play in CIF Basketball State Championships.

At the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, the girls beat West Torrance High School, 67-50 and clinched the Southern California Division II Regional Championship title. Senior center Devin Stanback scored a game-high 27 points, while Paige Fecske ’15 and Valerie Higgins ’16 contributed 15 points each.Regional Champions

Ten hours after the Chaminade Girls’ game began, the boys team tipped off the Southern California Division III Regional Championship game against Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Their game was played at Colony High School in Ontario, and finished with a buzzer beating three-point shot by Michael Oguine ’15. The final score was 53-52. Oguine scored 32 points in the game, 18 of them in the fourth quarter.

Regional Champions

The wins on Saturday means both teams will travel to Sacramento to play in the CIF Basketball State Championships at the Sleep Train Arena. Chaminade Boys’ Basketball takes on Sir Francis Drake (San Anselmo) on Friday, March 29 at 4:00 p.m. in the Division III title game. On Saturday, March 29, Chaminade Girls’ Basketball faces Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) at 2:00 p.m. for the Division II title.

The West Hills Athletic Office will pre-sale tickets to the CIF Basketball State Championships from Monday, March 24 to Wednesday, March 26. Tickets are $16 per adult and $10 per student or child.

Jack Williams ’14 Winner of John R. Wooden Award

DSC_8238For the third time in school history, a Chaminade Boys’ Basketball player has won the John R. Wooden Award. Senior power forward Jack Williams was named as one of seven winners for high school basketball player of the year today. Williams averages 16.7 points per game, 11.6 rebounds per game and is co-captain of this year’s team. He signed his National Letter of Intent in November 2013, and after graduating from Chaminade will go on to California State University, Long Beach.

The award will be presented to Williams and the six other winners at the Los Angeles Athletic Club on April 11 during the Wooden Award banquet.

Chaminade’s previous two Wooden Award winners were Scott Long ’98 in 1998 and Joe Fabian ’82. When Fabian won the award in 1982 it was known as the Player of the Year Award.

Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball Teams Advance to State Regional Finals

Sports DuoChaminade Basketball played host for the third time in one week for state regional playoffs on Tuesday, March 18. The Girls’ Basketball team faced Culver City High School in a Southern California Division II regional semifinal, and came away with a 76-46 win. They move on to the regional final game on Saturday, March 22 and will take on West Torrance High School. Tipoff is at 10:00 a.m. at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.

Chaminade Boys’ Basketball defeated Brea Olinda, 77-49 in a Division III regional semifinal. They face Santa Margarita Catholic High School in the regional final on Saturday at Colony High School in Ontario. Tipoff is at 8:00 p.m.

Girls’ and Boys’ Bask­­etball in State Playoffs

BBall DuoOn Wednesday, March 12, Chaminade will host round one of the CIF State Basketball Playoffs at the Uribe Sports Center on the West Hills campus. Both the Girls’ and Boys’ Varsity Basketball teams have advanced to State Playoffs.

The girls (24-4) are seeded #1 in Division 2AA and will play Tulare Western High School (21-7) at 6:00 p.m. The boys (22-6) are seeded #1 in Division 3A and will play Dinuba High School (24-5) at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are available at the door, $10 for adults and $6 for students and children under 12. Doors open at 5:00 p.m.

CIF Playoff Update

PF. Athletic Eagle no textChaminade Girls’ Basketball won their first round CIF-SS Open Division playoff match-up on Saturday, February 22, 64-44 against Lynwood. Next, they play in a quarterfinal game, and will travel to Long Beach Poly on Wednesday, February 26 for a 7:00 p.m. tip off. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Presale tickets are available through Chaminade Athletics, and cost $8 per adult, or $5 per student or child 13 and under.

Also competing in the CIF-SS Open Division is the Boys’ Basketball team. They traveled to Lakewood, and lost 72-64 to Mayfair on Friday, February 21. The Eagles move on to the consolation bracket and will face Cantwell-Sacred Heart High School on Friday, February 28 at Whittier High School. The game tips off at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Presale tickets are available through Chaminade Athletics, and cost $8 per adult, or $5 per student or child 13 and under.

After finishing second in the Mission League this season, Chaminade Girls’ Soccer lost in the first round of CIF-SS playoff to Mater Dei, 2-0.
