Chaminade Presents the 2012 Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame

From the beginning athletics have been an important part of the Chaminade experience.  Since 1952, athletes have competed for Chaminade, while coaches and boosters also committed thousands of hours to young Eagles and their athletic program.  In 2002, the Chaminade Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame was formed to honor those athletes, coaches, and boosters for their contributions to the School.

On Saturday, May 5, Chaminade inducted a new class of Hall of Fame honorees to the Hall of Fame.  For the first time, inductees included an entire team – the 1998 Varsity Boys Basketball Team.  Also honored were athletes Stephen Stark ’81, Lucy Braker Howell ’87, Chris Gray ’97, Marcus Everett ’04, and boosters, Nancy and Phil Mundy.

This new class of hall of famers gathered with their families, friends, teammates, and past inductees in the Uribe Center on Chaminade’s West Hills Campus for a special dinner and ceremony.   The evening’s festivities included a video introduction of each inductee, as well as an unveiling of the new “Wall of Fame” in the lobby of the Uribe Center.

Chaminade congratulates its newest members to the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame!

Chaminade Dancers Set to Take Tutor Center Stage

Nearly ten months ago two of Chaminade’s high school dance students donned dance costumes and hard hats for a photo shoot on what would soon be their stage in the Tutor Family Center for the Performing Arts.  As amazing as that experience was, walking into a brand new dance classroom was even better, and the best is yet to come.

On Friday, May 4, 2012, the dance program will take the Tutor Center stage for the first time with their annual dance concert.  This year’s performance, The Attic, is the story of two small children who are left in the care of their cold and distant aunt after their young mother’s passing.  They find an attic full of memories of “a Circus InBetween” – the place where their mother and aunt grew up.  In doing so, the children reconnect with their mother, and form a sweet connection with their aunt.  There are many things in The Attic for the audience to discover, and guests will enjoy contemporary and lyrical dance, in addition to Irish dance, belly dancing, and a beautiful Pointe piece.

Dance teacher and Chaminade alumna, Tarrylee Silke ’86 says, “Student choreography is at an all-time high…We will be hosting an aerial pre-show outside in the Tutor Center’s courtyard.”  Dancers will introduce aerial straps with a routine featuring Alexya Garcia ’12 and Jake Speyer ’12.  The routine was choreographed and trained by alumna, Marissa Pfaff ’06, who currently trains and performs with the Circus Center in San Francisco.

The Attic runs at the Tutor Center (West Hills campus) on May 4, 5, 6, 11 and 12.  All shows begin at 7:00 p.m., except for the May 6 performance, which is a matinee at 4:00 p.m.  To purchase tickets, guests may download an order form, or purchase tickets at the door on performance dates.  For more information, please contact Ms. Silke at tsilke@chaminade.org.

Eagle Business Wins SoCal Student Company of the Year

Chaminade Competes in 5th Annual VEX Robotics World Championship

By Nancy McIntyre

For three days members of both the High School and Middle School Eagle Engineering program competed at the 5th Annual VEX Robotics World Championship, which this year was held at the Anaheim Convention Center. The competition brought together the top 600 VEX teams from around the world in three divisions of middle, high school and college. The high school team made it to the semi-final, and was interviewed by KTLA for the afternoon news.  In addition, a production crew from Autodesk, an event sponsor, followed the team because of their outstanding work in Inventor, a CAD program which allows the team to do their design work on computers. Watch KTLA interview

On Friday, April 20 the team was invited to a presentation given by Douglass Osheroff, a Nobel Prize winning professor at Stanford. They even had time to get a photo with him!

The teams have already learned the new challenge for next year and started sketching and designing on their way to dinner following the end of the event. It looks like there will be a great deal of work going on over the summer so the team is ready for competition next fall.

8th Graders Volunteer During Easter Break

By Kate Lospalluto ’00

While students might spend Easter Break on vacation, or relax at home, some use it as an opportunity to serve others – and that is just what 15 of Chaminade’s 8th grade students did this year.  They took a few days to travel to the San Francisco Bay Area to volunteer.

The trip was chaperoned by Chaminade teachers Jen Bader, John Apablasa, and Kate Lospalluto ’00, along with parent Sandi Alderton.  Included among their stops was a visit to the Marianist community in Cupertino; the San Fancisco Food Bank; a visit to another Marianist school, Archbishop Riordan; various Vincent De Paul centers; the Catholic Worker; and the San Mateo Special Olympics. It was an amazing trip and quite the experience for Chaminade students.  They truly lived out “service, justice, and peace”!
