TACSC Student Leadership Day at Chaminade

Today Chaminade College Preparatory hosted 120 students in the 5th, 6th, and 7th Grades at The Association of Catholic Students Councils’ (TACSC) Student Leadership Day. Students came from Chaminade’s middle school campus, as well as Bay Laurel, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of the Valley, St. Bernardine, St. Bridget, St. John Eudes, St. Mark, St. Rose of Lima, and Woodland Hills School to participate in a day of workshops and practice. Thirty of Chaminade’s high school students also took part in the day’s activities as leaders.

TACSC is a national Catholic youth leadership development and training organization. During the 2015-2016 academic year, it has held 11 Student Leadership Days, including the final session conducted today at Chaminade. Each leadership day was an opportunity for Middle School students to learn about servant leadership, the consequences of individual’s actions, diversity, finding personal strengths, conflict management, and problem solving.

Kindness Week at the Middle School

Monday, March 14 kicks off Kindness Week at Chaminade’s Chatsworth campus, during which the middle school Diversity Team will sponsor two activities.

The first activity involves morning greeters. Every day this week, members of the team, along with moderators Mrs. Shenouda and Mr. Norton, will be outside at the curb welcoming all students to school. They will welcome everyone with smiles, “good mornings,” and signs with fun phrases.

The second activity is called “Hands Across Chaminade.” Diversity Team members will go to each X-block every day throughout the week, and all students will have the opportunity to acknowledge their peers who have done good deeds or provided service or compassion for others. Students can write the names of the peers they wish to recognize on paper hands, which will then be collected and connected to form a chain to hang in the Student Center. This public recognition of the wonderful things the Chaminade community provides for each other demonstrates the Diversity Team’s mantra, “Be kind, respectful, compassionate, and have empathy for one another”.

Ash Wednesday Mass at Chaminade College Preparatory

DSC_2642On Wednesday, February 10, 2016, the Lenten season begins with Ash Wednesday. Chaminade College Preparatory will hold a Mass and distribution of ashes at each campus in Chatsworth and West Hills.

Uribe Sports Center, West Hills

Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence for Catholics. Abstinence from eating meat is to be observed on all Fridays during Lent. This applies to all persons 14 and older. The law of fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday (February 10) and Good Friday (March 25) applies to all persons 18-years-old and younger than 59. Fast and abstinence mean that one full meatless meal per day may be eaten. Two other meatless meals may be taken sufficient to maintain strength, but together they should not equal a full meal. Liquids, including milk and fruit juice, may be taken between meals. If health or ability to work is affected, fasting does not oblige.

Let us pray:

Mary, you were a powerful and quiet presence in the life of your Son.
Let us humbly attend, as you did, to the God, who accomplishes great things in us,
As we work and pray during this season of Lent. Amen.

C-Notes Perform at Carnegie Hall

Taking the stage at Carnegie Hall is a dream for many, and for Chaminade’s C-Notes, it is a dream come true. On Sunday, April 14, the Middle School choir walked out onto the Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall and 64 students sang their hearts out for a full auditorium.

As the feature choir, the C-Notes opened the National Children’s Choir and National Youth Choir performances. They sang beautiful renditions of Exsultate Justi in Domino, Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, Vois sur ton chemin, and Old Joe Clark. In addition, they performed with the National Children’s Choir, which was comprised of students from schools in Brazil and Georgia, as well as California.

The Carnegie Hall performance was the culmination of an exciting five-day trip for the C-Notes and their chaperones. They caught Newsies on Broadway, attended Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, visited the Empire State Building, and enjoyed 5th Avenue sights and food.
